Work History
I got my first job when I was 15. I was an usher at a movie theater in Chesterfield, MI and I hated it. I hated having to "look busy" when there was nothing to do, I hated working on the weekends, I hated only getting free tickets to movies after they were out for weeks, and after eating movie theater popcorn every shift for a few weeks... well, I never hated the popcorn.
Every other job I've ever had has been better than working at that movie theater. That's the work experience employers probably care about.
Communications Specialist, city and county of broomfield
Along with a small, focused team, managed communications across the City and County of Broomfield, CO. While my focus was managing and editing the website, I worked on all aspects of communication for the city including social media management, project management, and event planning.
Communications Coordinator, cu boulder
Working entirely from home during the pandemic, I had to learn from and familiarize with coworkers and the standards and practices of CU Boulder from a distance. This was a website based position within the Student Affairs Department at a large university that required me working with a number of individuals and departments.
Communications specialist, Williston Public School District #1
There was no Communications Specialist here before me; there was no Communications Department at all. I'm thankful I've been given the ability to figure things out on the job and steer the department in the direct I think is best.
I do a little bit (or, in some cases, a lot) of everything. Get ready for a long list of job duties.
Communications Coordinator, University of Iowa Health Care Marketing and Communications
I met my boss at UIHC, Adrienne Coon, in a Journalism School class at Iowa. She was a guest speaker explaining her job managing the UIHC website and we had a great conversation about improvements and ideas I had based on this short presentation.
I worked for UIHC for almost three years, with my main focus being writing and editing for the UIHC website. I was given a lot of other opportunities there, too.
Miscellaneous job experience
I've never gone too long without working. The longest break I took was between the ages of 16- and 18-years-old. I have, however, had a number of jobs that don't directly translate to writing, public relations, or other communications.
But if you want to read about my time as a bouncer, the three years I spent folding towels in the basement of a hospital, or how I became a housekeeper in a remote Alaskan town, go ahead and click "About These Jobs".
