Background

I met Adrienne Coon when she was a guest speaker at a Journalism School class I was taking when I was a junior in college. She talked to the class about website design, web accessibility, content management, web marketing, and, her focal point, usability.

During class I raised my hand a few times and pointed out a few changes she might want to make to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics website. At one point she laughed and asked me, "Do you have a resume?"—which I thought was a joke—until we talked for a few minutes after class and she told me to send her a resume.

Adrienne was absolutely my mentor early in my professional world. She almost immediately trusted my judgement, which meant so much to me.

Essential Duties

  • Worked with a team of four other writers and editors to manage the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics websites
  • Wrote and edited pages for uihc.org and uichildrens.org
  • Met with clients—mainly UIHC doctors, nurses, and support staff—to determine solutions for any communications issues they may have been having
  • Strategized SEO-based editing plans to increase the success of various web pages
  • Contributed to the planning stages and execution of marketing campaigns
  • Edited both web pages and print publications for spelling, grammar, and accuracy
  • Worked almost entirely in HTML

My Favorite Part

The best part of working for UIHC's Marketing and Communications was the freedom I had in the New Media Division. My supervisor, Adrienne Coon, trusted me completely after only a few short weeks and allowed me the freedom to find my own projects on which to work.

Freedom gave me confidence and I'm convinced both allowed me to get a lot more done than if I had a micromanaging boss looking over my shoulder at all times.
